Story
We the Staff members of Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview, are walking in solidarity with thousands of Timorese, whose livelihoods have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Our aim is to walk, run or ride 3,840km collectively on Friday June 26th to raise as many funds per kilometer for The Timor-Leste Covid-19 Relief Fund, via Jesuit Mission (donations are tax-deductible).
Whilst the COVID-19 pandemic has not yet had a major health impact on Timor-Leste, it has decimated many areas of the economy. Hundreds of thousands of Timorese have lost their jobs.
The Jesuits in Timor-Leste have appealed to our community for urgent funding to supply food such as rice, cooking oil, and noodles for 480 households in vulnerable communities as an action to prevent hunger. They are also seeking protective equipment such as face masks and soap for these households as a way to mitigate the propagation of the virus.
So let’s get walking, running, or riding on Friday 26th June and together we can make a difference to the lives of those in Timor-Leste who need it most.
Jesuit Mission (AUSTRALIAN JESUIT MISSION OVERSEAS AID FUND)
Jesuit Mission works in over 14 countries with people who are living in the margins, suffering the indignity of poverty and injustice. In each community we partner with local Jesuits and other companions to provide a range of support and training that empowers women, men and children so they can build skills, capacity and resilience to live full and free lives.
The programs:
- Break cycles of poverty through teaching and education
- Protect the health of communities by providing medical care and programs that improve access to clean water and toilets
- Develop independent, strong communities through livelihood training and income-generating projects
- Support asylum seekers, refugees and displaced people in crisis
- Enable effective emergency response and relief
